ATI TEAS 7 tips and study guides

Read by the campfire.

Most lost points come from how study time is spent, not how much of it there is. Start with the mistakes, then pick a study guide.

Part 1 of 3

The 7 most common TEAS mistakes

Each one is common, and each one has a simple fix.

Studying every section the same amount

Science and Reading carry the most scored questions, 44 and 39. Anatomy and physiology alone accounts for 18.

Do this insteadGive Science the most time, starting with the body systems, and let a practice test show your weakest topics.

Never practicing under the clock

209 minutes is a long sitting, and English gives you about a minute per question. Accuracy drops when the pace is new.

Do this insteadTake at least one full-length timed test in a single sitting before test day.

Leaving questions blank

A blank answer can only cost you. There is no extra penalty for a wrong answer.

Do this insteadAnswer every question, even when your answer is a best guess.

Memorizing terms without the process

Many anatomy questions ask what happens next: where blood goes after a valve, or which hormone responds to a change. A list of terms won’t answer that.

Do this insteadLearn each body system as a sequence, and trace it out loud from start to finish.

Reading the passage before the question

Reading questions often turn on one word, such as not, except or most likely. Without the question in mind, it’s easy to read past it.

Do this insteadRead the question first, then read the passage looking for that answer.

Leaning on the calculator

A calculator is built into the exam, but fractions, percentages and unit conversions still take setup that the calculator can’t do for you.

Do this insteadPractice conversions and percent problems by hand until the setup feels automatic.

Not checking each program’s rules

Schools set their own minimum scores, and some also limit how often or how recently you can test.

Do this insteadBefore you book, write down each program’s minimum score, section requirements and retake rules.

Part 2 of 3

Six tips for the weeks before your test

Small habits that keep the 209 minutes calm.

  • Take a practice test first. A timed practice test on day one shows which sections need most of your time.
  • Study one body system at a time. Cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, endocrine. Finish one before you start the next.
  • Answer every question. There’s no extra penalty for a wrong answer, so never leave one blank.
  • Know your pace. About 73 seconds per Reading question, 90 for Math, 72 for Science and 60 for English.
  • Check your testing site’s rules. ID requirements and arrival times differ between schools and testing centers. Confirm them a week ahead.
  • Rest the day before. A short flashcard review and a full night’s sleep do more than new material at midnight.
